Due Diligence

In addition to the in-office coaching programs offered, another service we provide is conducting valuations for dentists. Some dentists are looking to sell their practices, while others are seeking a professional opinion when conducting due diligence for a practice they are considering purchasing. Assisting in determining a fair market value is the sole purpose of our valuation services offered. Clifton & Associates, Inc., nor any of it's representatives are practice brokers, CPA's or attorneys. Other services that require those types of professional services are beyond the scope of practice valuations. We may be able to refer you to someone if those services are needed.

Valuations typically consist of an on-site visit to the practice to obtain reports, documents and physical inspections to aid in determining fair market value. Information considered can include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Assessment of physical assets of the practice
  • Meeting the employees (if appropriate for those that are disclosing the sale of their office) and evaluation of compensation plans.
  • Reviewing production & collection reports
  • Reviewing profit & loss statements
  • Reviewing net income and cash flow
  • Evaluating new patient levels and marketing efforts
  • Evaluating procedures performed and potential areas for growth
  • Assessment of practice systems
  • Analysis of the patient base, demographics and insurance plans in which the practice participates
  • Evaluation of collection strategies, account receivables, fees and adjustments
  • Consideration of other relevant factors that may influence the current fair market value

In some cases the dentist requesting the valuation may desire a formal written report, which can also be prepared.


Scott StewartScott Clifton Stewart

In addition to having a business management degree, Scott has extensive experience in personnel management and training, customer service development, expense and inventory control, budget development, bookkeeping, systems development and marketing. He entered the dental field in 1991 and relocated to Southern California in 1994 to establish his own company. He and his wife Valerie, and their three children - Devoreaux, Jordan, and Chandler, live in Thousand Oaks. They and are actively involved with their church, children's schools and in various community service organizations.

Scott has worked with hundreds of dental practices since 1991 developing business plans, coaching and training dental teams, developing leadership skills, enhancing communication skills, training teams on customer service techniques, and successfully helping practices grow to new levels of productivity and profitability. In addition to being the primary trainer of the in-office coaching programs, he speaks regularly at the Conejo Valley Dental Institute and a variety of dental society and study club meetings throughout Southern California.

Becky has over 25 years of professional marketing and business development background, including 4 years as a practice management consultant with Clifton & Associates, Inc. from 2005-2009. Becky returns after almost 7 years as the Executive Director of California Health & Longevity Institute in Westlake Village. She holds a B.S. in Business and Marketing from the University of Colorado and an MBA in Finance from Regis University. She resides in Thousand Oaks with her husband Keith and twin boys, Matthew and Andrew, age 8.

Jamie’s education and background is in Interior Design. She is the owner of a small design firm in the San Fernando Valley. She has worked in the design industry for 14 years. In addition to design, Jamie has been planning events for non-profit organizations since 2000. A career update in 2011 led Jamie to Business Marketing. She is currently working as the Marketing Director for a successful dental practice in the Los Angeles area and in August of 2012 she joined Clifton & Associates as the Director of Continuing Education.
